Lions lose home opener vs Chicago FC United 4-1

Chicago, May 26, 2022

The men's team played their 2nd game in three days vs a strong Chicago FC United team. After picking up a win on the road in their opening game vs Springfield ASC on Tuesday, the Lions struggled in the first half giving up three goals in five minutes giving Chicago FC United a comfortable 3-0 lead. Kahveh Zahiroleslam scored in the 10th and 15th minute and Levante Johnson score in the 13th minute.

The Lions played a lot better in in the second half and the Lions managed to score a goal in the 89th minute when Azuka Kaneda scored his first goal of the season. Head Coach Nikhil Erlebach commented on the game: 'In the first half we got killed in a short time frame where we we were not focused and gave up too much space. And Chicago FC United is a team that has a lot of quality and you get punished for that immediately. We adjusted our formation in the second and we played much better. Their goal in the second half was clearly offsides so I am pleased what I saw in the second half and we will look to carry that over to our next game vs St. Louis Lions next week."

The Lions are now 1-1-0 (3 points) while Chicago FC United is 1-0-1 (4 points). The Lions are on the road June 4 to play St. Louis Lions who are 2-0-0 (6 points) and Division leaders with 6 points.
